Important Notes for Preparing Canva Print Files
Setting the Final Size
(1) Click “+ Create a design”.
(2) Click “Custom Size”.
(3) Set the unit to “mm”.
(4) Enter “Width” and “Height.” Width is horizontal, height is vertical. Match the design size.
Bleed Area Setting
(1) Go to “File” > “Settings” > “Show print bleed.” Bleed area will appear on screen.
Important: Be sure to extend your design (background colors or images) all the way to the bleed area. If there is no bleed, slight misalignment during trimming may cause white edges to appear on the final print.
How to Save as PDF
(1) Click “Share” > “Download.”
(2) Select “PDF Print.”
(3) Check “Crop marks and bleed” and “Flatten PDF,” then click “Download.” Use this PDF.
About Color Profile
RGB uses screen light for vivid colors, but prints may appear duller.
Printed RGB files may look duller or different than on screen. Please understand this.
Font Substitution and How to Avoid It
About Embedding Fonts in PDF Files
When submitting a PDF file, fonts may not display correctly if they are not embedded in the PDF. Fonts that are not embedded will be replaced with substitute fonts, which can cause the design to break. To prevent this, use fonts that can be embedded in the PDF to ensure that the appearance of the fonts does not change.
In Canva, exporting in the “PDF Print” format automatically embeds fonts, but in rare cases, the embedding may fail. Therefore, please use the following methods to check and address any font issues.
Checking and Ensuring Font Embedding in Canva
Use Canva’s standard fonts or other fonts that support embedding. Fonts uploaded from external sources may not be embeddable.
Download the PDF file and check it in a viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader to ensure that the fonts are displayed correctly. If the text appears as intended, the fonts have been successfully embedded.
In Adobe Acrobat, go to “File” → “Properties” → “Fonts”. If the fonts are listed as “Embedded” or “Embedded Subset,” the embedding has been successful.
If fonts cannot be embedded, you can convert the text to outlines using Adobe Illustrator. However, please note that once outlined, the text will no longer be editable.
